Can I set AlacrityPC not to start restarting services and programs until
I want to?
I wanted to have a name that wasn't specific to Flight Simulator. The
program has evolved to a point where it can be used for any game or
application, and I wanted to have a name that reflects this. Alacrity means
fast, which is the purpose of this program.
AlacrityPC is designed to run on the following OS:
Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, 2003, and 2008 and in both 32bit and 64bit.
I chose to use .NET for a variety of reasons. One, it is the language of
the future on Windows (and possibly Linux) platforms. Second, it provides
capabilities that are difficult to achieve using regular languages (FSAutoStart
was written in C++). Third, there is nothing wrong with .NET. It uses no
resources or CPU when you aren't running a .NET program. It will not screw
up your operating system. I weighed the pros and cons, and concluded that
there is no reason not to use .NET.
You can setup profiles that inherit settings from parent profiles. This
allows you to setup one profile for your services and program settings, then
setup profiles for each application you want to launch that use the parent
profile. If you ever need to modify a service or program, you only have to
do it one place. This should help in managing your settings from a central
place.
On Vista, any program that requires administrator access will cause the
OS to ask the user for permission if UAC is enabled. The reason it says
"unidentified program" is that older versions of AlacrityPC are not
digitally signed.
As of 31 March 2008, AlacrityPC is now digitally signed and will not give
this message anymore. If you still get this message, please use Check
For Updates to get the latest version.
AlacrityPC will not display any service or programs that 1) are essential
to the operation of the computer (for example, RPC) or 2) knows that it will
not be able to Stop.
Currently, AlacrityPC can only use the first icon in a executable or dll
file for the profile icon.
Drag the profile out of the AlacrityPC main window and drop onto the
desktop or in a folder.
This is because the names of the services are not in English, but the web
site that is used to provide the information expects them to be in English.
You can launch a profile by starting the program 'alacritypccontrol.exe'
located in the folder where you installed AlacrityPC with the following
command line:
alacritypccontrol.exe -p profile_filename
The profile_filename does not have a path, just the filename.
The default profiles are in your installation folder. They are
called "Default Vista Profile.profile" and "Default XP Profile.profile".
Copy them to your AlacrityPC Profiles folder located in your Documents.
Yes, by going to the Optimization page and setting the "After monitored
programs have been closed" action to "Pause processing". AlacrityPC
will pause when the monitored program(s) close, allowing you to press a key
to restart the process.
